Industry and education to work together to improve opportunities for students with SEND

Today, employers, government officials and education providers across the country pledged support for a brand new campaign, centred around providing work experience opportunities for young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). 

‘Campaign 2’ was launched at the fifth annual conference of Talentino, a Social Enterprise that aims to improve social, educational, personal and economic outcomes for ALL young people, especially those with SEND and learning difficulties, through high quality career development. The campaign aims to amplify the role that employers take in Special Schools as part of students’ early career development resulting in more jobs and training opportunities for school leavers.

Well-known employers have already shown keen interest with the initiative including Microsoft, The National Grid, The Co-Op Group and Greenwood Academies Trust. They will work alongside Talentino to provide support and develop work opportunities specifically designed for SEND children. 

Hosted by Capital One, Talentino’s annual conference brings together sector experts and thought leaders to raise awareness of issues facing young adults with SEND along with over 50 Special Schools from around the country. 

Jenny Connick, Founder of Talentino, said:

“We know that across the country 65 per cent of adults with learning difficulties want to work, but only 6 per cent have a paid job, meaning there is a gap between the motivation of young Industry and education to work together to improve opportunities for students with SENDpeople with SEND and what is actually available for them to build a successful career. 

“I am delighted that Campaign 2 has been launched today to not only raise awareness of the lack of work and training opportunities for students with SEND, but also attempt to provide a solution to bridge this gap. I would like to thank those employers who are already working with us on this campaign, including The Co-Op, The National Grid and of course one of our major partners, Greenwood Academies Trust.
