Showcased at Bett 2019 for the first time, Lexplore (stand B303) has brought 30 years of research into reading development to create a new tool that will help teachers accurately pinpoint children’s reading attainment. The artificial intelligence software in Lexplore highlights specific eye movement patterns in children which can suggest reading difficulties including dyslexia. This can help teachers identify children who may be struggling with reading in a matter of minutes.

National reading charity Beanstalk is urging more people to consider becoming a reading helper in 2019 to not only help transform the lives of children who struggle with reading, but also to discover how being a volunteer can positively change their own lives and significantly improve wellbeing.  

According to the latest feedback received by over 1,200 Beanstalk volunteers, being a reading helper in 2017-18 has helped them feel better connected to their local communities while improving mental activity and overall wellbeing, with 93% saying they would recommend becoming a reading helper to others.

A story-telling approach can help boys aged two to five-years-old catch up with the literacy levels of girls in the same class, research by Goldsmiths, University of London has found.

Tales Toolkit is a storytelling programme, currently used for children up to age seven in more than 120 schools across the UK and eight countries worldwide, that encourages imagination and creativity. It provides schools with child-led resources based around symbols to represent story structure of character, setting, problem and solution.

As youngsters across the country celebrate World Book Day, we take a look at crowdfunding campaign Life-changing Stories which has been launched to bring books and stories to life for children with additional needs.

Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children’s Books will raise money for the campaign on Crowdfunder UK. The museum and gallery, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, is seeking support in its Life-changing Stories campaign to raise £7,000 to fund a range of fully accessible events and experiences that will allow children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities to step into their favourite stories in an inclusive and sensory environment.
